The terrifying scene unfolded Saturday at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz, California, when a young boy — believed to be around 10 years old — was riding waves on a surfboard and got swept out to sea as powerful, relentless surf slammed into the shoreline. Witness Scott Vander Dussen, who was photographing the beach at the time, spotted the boy's head appearing and disappearing in the whitewater and immediately alerted a nearby lifeguard.

That lifeguard was 16-year-old Ryder, a local high school student working his shift that day. Without hesitation, he sprinted into the water and dove straight into conditions that even experienced beachgoers were struggling against.

As the rescue played out, several bystanders rushed into the water and attempted to form a human chain to assist Ryder and the struggling boy. But the pounding surf proved too strong, repeatedly tearing the chain apart before it could make a real difference. It wasn't until a second lifeguard arrived that the pair were finally pulled to safety, ending a rescue that Santa Cruz State Parks lifeguard supervisor Bryan Kine later confirmed was one of more than 25 rescues performed that single day due to the hazardous conditions.

"The ocean has a lot more power than any human. And it definitely shows its strengths now and again," Kine said. "If there were no lifeguards on the beach, how many of those people wouldn't have made it home to their families?"

Once brought to shore, the young boy was evaluated by paramedics and reunited with his family. Officials confirmed no one involved in the rescue itself was seriously injured — a genuinely remarkable outcome given just how violent the footage looks.
